WHY?

Over the last 20 years or so, a majority of school knitwear has been made from some form of 100% acrylic, marked under such brands as "Acrilan, Estorelle, Courtelle LC, gold, definition" etc. All acrylic fibre (acrylonitrile, its generic name) is totally synthetic and made mainly from petroleum. Although all acrylic (whatever its brand name) is a cheap durable fibre with a light handle it will always have the drawback of pilling, static build up and flammability.

Cotton, on the other hand, is a natural fibre, cool and soft and comfortable to wear and touch. Cotton "breathes" and is hygienic and absorbent. Today, parents and children alike demand the benefits of natural fibres like cotton, in all their clothing and not just Schoolwear.
